Ak by ste niekedy v rokoch 1945 alebo 1950 vážne navrhli ktorúkoľvek ideu alebo politické opatrenie, ktoré dnes patria do štandardného arzenálu neoliberalizmu, boli by vás s výsmechom zmietli z pódia alebo poslali do blázinca. Aspoň v západných štátoch v tých časoch bol každý buď stúpencom Keynesa, sociálnym demokratom, kresťanským demokratom alebo vyznával isté odtiene marxizmu. Myšlienky, že závažné sociálne a politické rozhodnutia by mal robiť trh, prípadne že štát by mal dobrovoľne obmedzovať svoju úlohu v ekonomike, že korporácie majú dostať úplnú voľnosť a naopak, že je potrebné oslabiť vplyv odborov a občania majú mať radšej podstatne menej ako viac sociálnej ochrany - takéto myšlienky boli úplne cudzie duchu tej doby. Ak aj niekto naozaj zastával tieto myšlienky, bol by váhal vystúpiť s nimi na verejnosti a ak by aj bol vystúpil, len s ťažkosťami by pre ne hľadal publikum.

Junky Styling: Recyling Glamour

The striking garment shown at left was created by deconstructing a rain mackintosh, recutting the material, and then recombining the resulting pieces with extraordinary imagination. It is typical of the work produced by a London-based company called Junky Styling. The company’s name is an ironic reference to their use of second-hand clothing as their raw material. The transformed final garments are stylish, well-constructed, and finished in great detail. Vogue called their clothing “high fashion street couture.”

As teenagers Annika Sanders and Kerry Seager began taking men’s suits (bought from second hand shops) and turning them into experimental garments to wear to clubs. “We began because we wanted to dress differently. Initially, it was all about unique design, and we were able to achieve this through cutting up clothes that were second hand.” While traveling they noticed that textile recycling was already happening in cities like San Francisco and Tokyo, and their own designs drew lots of compliments. Their London friends began to commission outfits, and this led to a market stall in Kensington Market. In 1997 they launched Junky Styling, and their clothing is now stocked in shops in cities like London, Paris, and Hong Kong.

I learned of their work through the new book Junky Styling: Wardrobe Surgery. The ethos of their company is “timeless, deconstructed, re-cut, and completely transformed clothing,” and they are so committed to recycling textiles that their book contains a how-to section with basic instructions for some of their most popular designs. Intrigued, I asked them a couple of questions.

What to do if you or your organization are targeted by federal law enforcement

Federal law enforcement agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have a dark history of targeting radical and progressive movements. Some of the dirty tricks they use against these movements include: the infiltration of organizations to discredit and disrupt their operations; campaigns of misinformation and false stories in the media; forgery of correspondence; fabrication of evidence; and the use of grand jury subpoenas to intimidate activists. Today’s activist must know and understand the threat posed by federal law enforcement agents and their tactics as well as several key security practices that offer the best protection.

Federal agents have many tools at their disposal to target activists. While it is important to know and understand these tools and tactics, it is of critical importance that you resist any paranoia of government surveillance or fear of infiltration, which will only serve to paralyze you or your organization in your quest for social change. If fear of government repression prevents you from organizing, the agents of repression will have won without even trying.

Anarchistické dny 2009

V polovině loňského listopadu se v pražském infocafé Krtkova kolona uskutečnil veletrh anarchistických vydavatelství. Letos bychom chtěli na tuto akci navázat a rozšířit ji o několik dalších zajímavých aktivit. Nebudou se týkat jen vydavatelské či prezentační činnosti, proto jsme letošní akci nazvali jednoduše: "Anarchistické dny". Stejně jako loni, i letos jsme zvolili termín předcházející státnímu svátku 17. listopadu. Bude se konat 13.-17. 11, aby všichni měli možnost se alespoň části akcí zúčastnit. Letos to bude o to pikantnější, že na 17. listopadu připadá již 20. výročí diktatury kapitálu, která si říká demokracie.

Začneme v pátek 13. listopadu promítáním několika filmů z produkce Palash a mini install festem, ve kterém všechny seznámíme se svobodným softwarem, jeho instalací, triky, a používáním jednotlivých open source programů.

Sobotu a část neděle bychom chtěli věnovat veletrhu anarchistických vydavatelství. Zde si navzájem vyměníme nápady a zkušenosti, seznámíme ostatní s vaší vydavatelskou činností a prací, kterou obnáší. Budeme diskutovat nad různými tématy, nejen mezi sebou, ale hlavně s čtenáři, posluchači, diváky atd. Proto chceme poprosit všechny ty, kteří si chtějí připravit prezentaci, ať se nám prosím ozvou na náš e-mail.
