INTERNATIONAL LABOUR-KOREA: ANALYSIS OF THE SSANGYONG MOTORS FACTORY OCCUPATION:

Thursday, August 20, 2009

The factory occupation at the Ssangyong Motors factory has ended (this time for real), with the final eviction of the occupying workers. The repercussions have yet to be fully played out. Here is an analysis of the occupation from the pages of LibCom, and I have to say that I agree with the author. Factory occupations are becoming an essential tool for workers to win their rights when faced with intransigent management, but they are far more likely to be successful if their struggle is generalized, both in the local community, nationally and internationally. One cannot always shift the blame to pusillanimous "union leaders". In the end ordinary people have to understand the need for publicity and generalization when they are faced with such situations. Networks of solidarity simply have to be built through the initiative of ordinary workers. Relying on representatives is just as fatal in a workplace dispute as it is in politics. Here's the story.
