Freeganism is an environmental movement that sees devotees living off society’s waste.
About 17 million tons of food are buried in British landfill sites every year, four million of which are edible.
The website Freegan.info, founded by New York freegan, eco-activist and some- time security guard Adam Weissman, says: “Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources.
“Freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity and greed.”
